Apple - Final Cut Pro - Comparison Viewer (10.4.4)
Our Role
We were assigned to be the design DRI (directly responsible individual) for this feature, working from the early conceptual stages, through design iterations, to working with engineering to implement the designs into working builds.
Background
During the color grading process, an editor or colorist has a need to reference a particular frame in order to normalize the look of the entire project. For example, when you look at two clips from the same shot, one clip could be adjusted to look warmer, but now is not in sync with the second shot, which has not been altered.
Outcome
We addressed these workflow issues by introducing a new comparison viewer mode in the second viewer. There are two ways to use the comparison viewer: in the “Saved” mode, the user can store a reference frame from anywhere in the project and can be used as a reference frame. The second “Timeline” mode shows the last frame from the previous clip or first frame from the next clip. This mode allows the user to work their way through the project in sequence (forward or backward) and reference those frames while grading the current clip.
