Our Role

We were assigned to be the design DRI (directly responsible individual) for this feature, working from the early conceptual stages, through design iterations, to working with engineering to implement the designs into working builds.

Background

For more advanced editors, there is a need to reference the source timecode (timecode from the original source clip) of clips within the timeline to ensure correct timing and for reference.

Previous, the user could only read out only a single source timecode using what is known as the clip skimmer. One of the key requirements was for a user to view the source timecode of all objects in the timeline under the playhead/skimmer. In addition, to increase legibility, the clip name, role, and role color were key identifiers within the new UI.

Outcome

We decided to present the new timecode UI as a floating HUD (heads up display). This provides the flexibility for our users to place the UI anywhere they need. Depending on the position of the playhead or skimmer, the timecode HUD reads out the source timecode of all objects at that position in time. The timecodes are all tinted with the appropriate role colors. By default, the project timecode is shown at the very top of the HUD, but can be turned off.

We designed the HUD to be fully customizable. The project and source timecodes can be turned on or off as needed. The clip name and roles can also be toggled on or off. As for the background options, we decided to allow two choices, transparent or blur. The blur background increases contrast and improves legibility, but if a user needs to see content behind the HUD, a transparent option is available.
